So you've got your very own action camera. Congratulations! Now you can shoot a lot of stuff during your travels and road trips and the best thing about it is that you don't have to worry about potential damage since action cams are built to survive in tough environments. Now the only thing left for you to do is to familiarise yourself with your camera's features so you can start shooting amazing videos that you can brag about to your mates.
Action Camera Shooting Modes
When shooting videos with your action camera, one of the things you should consider is the shooting mode. Depending on the type of footage you want to create, each shooting mode produces different video qualities so think about your shooting mode choice carefully before going for it.
1. WVGA 240fps Wide
Shooting with WVGA is not really advisable if you want crystal-clear videos. Aliasing is usually present, but the novelty of 240 frames per second (fps) is quite good when compared to other shooting modes. If image quality is not that important to you, you can use this shooting mode with your sports action cam for taking videos you want to post on YouTube.
2. 720p 120fps Wide
Jagged edges are usually present when you look at the video taken with this mode at full resolution. Scaling can sometimes be off and the sensor will give you some aliasing. On the upside, if your goal is to put the video on the web then you can use this, especially for slow motion videos, to produce good footages.
3. 720p 120fps Narrow
This shooting mode is a favourite among expert users of action video camera. With this, you won't get lens distortion and you can create clean footages without aliasing. Creating slow-mo videos produce excellent results, too, and the best thing about this shooting mode is that it's great for shooting both web and personal videos.
4. 960p 100fps Wide
This shooting mode is similar to 720p 120fps wide, but you also have the opportunity to enjoy a bit of resolution by stretching 960p to fit to 1080p. However, with this mode, you'll get footages with slightly jagged edges when you look at them at full resolution.
5. 1080p 30fps Wide
Using this shooting mode will give you videos with great details and sharpness, which is similar to those taken at 2.7 30fps. This is also advisable for taking videos at dusk or at night and other low-light conditions.
Choosing the most appropriate shooting mode can make a huge difference to the videos that you are taking. So make sure to experiment with the settings of your action cam so you can see which combinations will give you the best results.
