A global automotive supplier is developing a new technology that will take the capabilities of the reversing camera to the next level. At a recent event with the Allianz Centre for Technology (AZT) in Ismaning, Germany, Continental introduced a camera system that utilises “surround view” technology. The company believes that the device can provide enhanced safety and better manoeuvrability for drivers.
Just like today’s existing camera systems, Continental’s camera is designed to help drivers avoid collisions while reversing at low speeds. The difference, however, is that with the integrated Surround View technology, the camera can capture the entirety of the vehicle’s surroundings in a 360-degree view. It can also be used for other functions.
“Until now, fish eye camera technology was used to assist drivers while parking by showing the vehicle from a bird’s eye perspective and the vehicle path while reversing. This allows drivers to better estimate the distance to objects in their surroundings,” said Wolfgang Fey, director of the Surround View Segment of the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Business Unit within Continental’s Chassis & Safety Division. “However, we see additional applications for the surround view systems. These include automatic brake intervention while reversing, a cross traffic assistant and automated parking.”
Unlike other car reversing cameras, Continental’s prototype has four fish eye cameras. One is located at the front bumper, one at the rear, and one at the base of each side mirror. Each camera has an aperture angle of more than 180 degrees. This allows the camera system to capture the surroundings of the car without gaps.
The prototype camera also features an image analysis system and the electronic control unit for the Surround View system is connected to the car’s electronic brake system. When the image analysis system recognises an object that cannot be otherwise avoided, the camera’s electronic control unit brakes the car automatically, thus preventing a collision.
Another quality that Continental’s prototype camera has that you’d like your own car reversing camera kit to have is its ability to classify objects. Not only can it recognise a wide range of objects on the street, it can also tell you if an object is a pedestrian, a cyclist, a tree, or a fire hydrant amongst other things.
Despite its impressive qualities, Continental’s camera system is far from perfect and is still under development. But for the meantime, you can always rely on the reversing camera for caravan being offered by Elinz Electronics to help you improve your vehicle’s safety and manoeuvrability.
