Even if a vehicle is reversing slowly, it can still cause fatal accidents, especially if the vehicle in question is a bus. This is similar to what recently happened in Hobart, when a bus driver reversed on a pedestrian, accidentally killing him in the process. This incident underscores the importance of installing reverse camera mirror, especially in large vehicles that operate in public places.
An Unfortunate Event
According to reports, 55 year old Anthony Ross Young of Warrane, Tasmania, died after he was hit by a bus driven by Steven John Peardon, 31, in the Rosny Park bus mall on July 15 last year. Peardon pleaded not guilty to causing death by driving without due care and attention.
Crown prosecutor Jessica Wade told the Magistrates Court in Hobart that it was Peardon's negligence that brought about the unfortunate incident. According to her, the accused failed to keep a proper look out before reversing and he might have also failed to properly check his mirrors, which is something that could've have been avoided with the help of a reversing camera kit.
Witness Flora Robinson told the court that she ran to bang on the side of the bus, screaming at Peardon to stop when she saw Young crossing behind it. Constable Michael Preshaw, who was at the location but off duty at the time of the accident, came over when he saw the driver with a "horrified look on his face" and somebody's leg sticking under the rear of the bus. When he crawled under the vehicle, he saw Young with no signs of life.
Reports said it is likely to take three days before the court can decide on the case.
The Importance of Installing a Reversing Camera
This incident underscores the importance of improving the safety features of your vehicle, especially if you're driving one with a bigger size and more blind spots. Whether it is a wired or wireless rear view camera, having this nifty car accessory can go a long way towards ensuring not only your and your passengers' safety, but those of other pedestrians, as well. It can alert you to the presence of a person or object at the back of your car prior to reversing, thus, preventing you from accidentally backing on them.
If you have yet to install a reversing camera for car, now is the perfect time to do so. Make sure that you share this article with your friends so they will also know the importance of having this nifty safety accessory in their respective vehicles.
