Using a car battery charger might look simple, but in fact it is much more complicated than you think. There are so many things you need to consider before you can charge you car’s battery and if you are a total newbie in this endeavour then it might even be potentially dangerous. If you are not the type of person that would read the user manual then here is how to charge a battery with your charger:
Step 1: Prepare the battery for the charging. It is important to do this step in order for your charge to be successful. If you are planning to remove the battery from the vehicle to charge it, please do it immediately before you start. It is extremely dangerous to move the battery while it is charging.
Step 2: Jump the Car Battery. Make sure that all of the accessories and all of the lights of the vehicle are off. It is important that you remove the negative or ground cable first and you can know the difference if you inspect the top of the battery. The ground cable will be indicated with a negative symbol (-) and the power cable will be noted with a positive symbol (+).
Next, clean the battery terminal with a mixture of baking soda and baking soda, and a terminal cleaning brush. This will neutralise the acids in the battery that could actually impede its performance. Then you must check the water levels of the battery and if you think that it is on a low level this is when you should add distilled water only.
Step 3: Get battery charger and start charging. The basic charging instructions are as follow:
Make sure that the charger is off.
Take the positive cable from the charger and attach it on to the corresponding positive cable on your battery.
Now, attach the negative cable on the charger to the negative cable on your battery.
Adjust the levels of your charger to the slowest charging rate.
Turn on the charger and start the timer.
Charging times might differ from battery to battery, but as a general rule of thumb if the voltage of the battery is below 11.85 and the battery charger jump starter is putting out a 5-amp charge rate then it could take 12 hours to fully charge it. However, it is always best to consult with your charger’s manual to know the charging information.
