Since inverters don't generate their own power, it is very important that you connect them to a reliable power source to ensure continuous operation and optimum power efficiency. There is a wide range of batteries you can purchase for your 12v or 24v pure sine wave inverter and to ensure that you'll get the most suitable one, it's important to consider their specifications. Let's take a look at some of the most important ones and determine how they can help you decide which type of battery you should get for your inverter.
1. Cold Cranking Amps or CCA
CCA is used for measuring a battery's capability to start a vehicle. It allows you to determine how many amperes a new fully charged battery can produce for 30 seconds at -17 degrees Celsius while maintaining a terminal voltage of at least 1.2 volts per cell or 7.2 volts on a 12v battery. You cannot use CCA as an indication of how long your battery will run with your inverter because in most cases, an inverter system automatically shuts down when it reaches 10 to 10.5 volts.
2. Reserve Capacity
Reserve capacity indicates the amount of minutes a new fully charged battery can continually produce 25 amps at 26 degrees Celsius until the voltage reaches 10.5 volts (DC). To use this specification to determine which battery is more suited for your pure sine wave power inverter, you need to determine how much capacity you'll need to run a load for a predetermine amount of hours. Or you can also figure out how long your appliance will run on the battery.
3. Ampere-Hours
The amp-hour rating is perhaps the best spec to help you determine the best inverter battery. With this spec, what you should do is convert your wattage and runtime requirement into watt hours and then into amp-hours. For example, you want to run a 500 watt refrigerator for ten hours. First, multiply your wattage by the required runtime (e.g. 500w x 10), so you'll have 5,000 watt-hours. Convert it into amp-hour by dividing it by 10 if you're using 12v inverters. This means the refrigerator will require 500 amp-hours when you run it for ten hours.
Next, multiply 500 amp-hours by 2 and this will give you your battery requirement of 1000 amp-hours. Doubling the original calculation is important because, as mentioned earlier, most inverters will shut off at around 10.5v. This gives you more room and ensures the inverter will keep on going even if the battery starts being discharged.
Still having a hard time figuring out which battery is best for your pure sine wave inverters? Aside from looking at the battery's specs, you can also ask the seller for advice to ensure that you won't make any mistake. Happy shopping!
