The pure sine wave inverter has definitely changed that way people use electronic appliances and devices on the go. But did you know that things can only get better from here? Innovators are currently developing and coming up with new ways to further improve the usability of inverters and make them more efficient when utilised in more sophisticated applications. One of them is the Oak Ridge National Laboratory or ORNL in the United States.
ORNL has developed a new power inverter that combines advances in 3D printing and wide-band semiconductor technology. According to reports, this “marriage” of two technologies will significantly improve the performance of inverters while being contained in a smaller, lighter package. And with further development, it could even make a significant contribution to the creation of better and more energy-efficient electric cars in the future.
Most people are familiar with the functions of 24v and 12v pure sine wave inverter. The inverter basically allows them to use various electrical appliances and power tools despite being off the power grid. However, what many of them don’t know is that inverters are an integral part of any electric vehicle. Inverters take the direct current stored in the batter pack and transform this electricity into AC power that makes the motor run.
The inverter designed by ORNL features a very significant improvement in terms of power density, weight, and volume. Lead researcher Dr Madhu Chinthavali said he and his team are further scaling up the inverter to make it much smaller and more compact so it will be half the size of inverters found in commercially available electric vehicles.
But if you think there is all to it, think again. Dr Chinthavali thinks that with further development, it is still possible to achieve an inverter with four times the power density of their current prototype. "Mass production of the printed technology is not there yet, but things are evolving rapidly,” he said.
The future of 12v and 24v pure sine wave power inverter is indeed looking up. As more researchers are coming up with ways to further improve the performance, power capacity, and sizes of these nifty electronic devices, you can only imagine what they can achieve five to ten years from now.
Meanwhile, it is still good to invest in a power inverter even if you don’t have an electric car. As mentioned earlier, power inverters are quite handy as they can provide you with mobile power solutions that are safe, handy, and efficient.
