It is no secret that having a GPS navigation device in your car is quite advantageous, especially if you’re not adept at reading maps or you are embarrassed to ask strangers for directions. This electronic gadget makes travelling in unfamiliar places much easier because it provides you with information you need, allowing you to get from Point A to Point B in the fastest and most efficient way possible.
Bust just like any electronic gadget these days, a GPS is not immune to errors. There are instances that you will miss a turn because your car’s GPS failed to inform you to do so due to signal interference. It is also possible that you may not get accurate directions all the time. However, that could possible change as a team of researchers in the United States is developing a new, hyper-accurate system for GPS devices.
According to reports, researchers from the University of Texas at Austin is creating a new system for GPS devices that will enhance GPS accuracy from a few feet to a few inches. The system reportedly utilises waves that are much smaller than the signals a regular GPS car navigation system is using. So when the signals from different satellites overlap, the area of interaction becomes much smaller, leading to more accurate location estimates. Currently, the researchers are using an external device called GRID to measure those waves as they have yet to determine how to incorporate the system in phones and portable navigation devices.
Aside from improving the accuracy of existing GPS devices, the researchers are also keen on using the GPS system they are developing to augment existing virtual reality systems. According to them, by tracking users’ movement more precisely with the device, it could make walking around in a virtual environment much smoother and more immersive.
As technology continues to develop and improve, it is only a matter of time before you get to enjoy a more sophisticated and more accurate portable GPS navigation system. But for now, you can surely rely on dependable GPS devices from Elinz Electronics.
