If you love travelling in the country side or often travel in off-road locations then having a car battery charger will be useful to have in case of an emergency. You can’t really tell when your car battery will be drained, which is why it’s important to plan ahead. Choosing the perfect battery charger can be difficult if you don’t know what to look for when shopping for one.
The battery type – this is the first thing you should be able to determine, but since most car batteries are lead-acid batteries with lead plates, then this makes it easier to pick one. They only differ whether they are the standard lead-acid, AGM or Absorbed glass mat, Gel Cell, or Deep Cycle. One type of charger can work for all types of batteries except for the gel cell.
Battery size – your vehicle will usually determine whether the battery charger needs to charge 12 volts or will need to handle only 6 volts. A common car battery charger can accommodate 12 volt batteries, and in some cases they will be able to handle 6 volts. If you don’t specifically need a 6 volt charger then purchasing a 12 volt battery charger will be more efficient.
Hours of charge – This is also related to the battery size but this focuses more on the amp hours the car battery charger has. A normal car battery will have about 50 amp hours stored, so you will need to choose a 10 amp charger or better. This will take about 5 to 6 hours depending on the car battery charger.
Extra Features
Once you’ve identified the main features you need in your car battery charger, it won’t hurt to look for extra features in a car battery. Some car chargers are also equipped with the ability to jump start your car. A battery charger jump starter combo will be perfect to have in case you are in a rush and wish to jump start your car instead. If you are on a camping trip and want to head home, jump starting can be a better choice instead of waiting for the car battery charger to charge your car battery.
Other features to look for would be safety features which will include voltage regulation, over charge protection, short circuit protection, etc. With these safety features you won’t have to worry about electrical surges that may affect your car battery or the car battery charger.
