OBD2 scanners are excellent pieces of tech that have helped plenty of mechanics and car owners figure out what's wrong with their vehicles. Guesswork is left out of the equation, leading to faster resolution of issues, helping to save both time and money.
But some are just completely mystified with OBD2 diagnostic scanners- if you do have one and you still haven't used it, or if you're planning on getting one here's a quick guide from us on how you can use it quickly and properly.
Conversely, here are some things that you MUST AVOID when using an OBD2 device:
1. Unplugging the OBD2 device in the middle of scanning. This might lead to codes not being generated (which means that you won't be able to address specific issues that the vehicle is currently having), or at worst it might lead to data corruption (which you most certainly do not want happening).
Be patient and wait for the diagnostic scanner to finish scanning. In some advanced issues, it might take a while.
2. Guessing/assuming what the codes are. Not only is this a waste of time, but your mechanic who's more familiar than you at OBD2 codes will also just look funny at you. It's best to just jot down the codes on a piece of paper or on your smartphone, check them online including the make & model of your vehicle, and go from there.
You will recognize some patterns (such as certain issues related to certain parts of your car predicated by the same letters), and that should help you recognize just what the true issue is.
3. Yanking out the OBD2 device with a left and right motion. Sure, most of these devices are built tough, but then pins inside it and your vehicle's data pins might see some damage if you yank too hard. Push in carefully when plugging in, and pull out in a smooth motion when plugging out.
There you have it. If you're looking for some really great OBD2 scanners (bundled in with a GPS tracker), do visit our listings here today at Elinz!
