It's been quite some time since security cameras were invented. At the beginning they were quite rudimentary, bulky, impractical. Now, they're highly advanced; a lot of thought, consideration and powerful technology have been put inside today's security cameras.
What was once a very restrictive and power-hogging piece of tech that record lots just to operate can now work with just one camera, and a small piece of memory to keep all that video data recorded.
But this year, we’ve come across some pretty interesting tech in our security cameras that you can get today to protect your home and your family. We’ll be sharing them with you today in this blog entry.
IP security camera
Before, security cameras could only operate with a so-called Close Circuit; also known as a CCTV. The CCTV demanded that there be a central hub, the main DVR that keeps all the recordings from the security cameras in the system.
It’s effective, but it could be a little restrictive. It had wires and it could get easily expensive, since larger DVRs mean more money. More cameras in the system also meant more money (CCTV systems have become more affordable in the current era, though).
But IP security cameras helped solve that problem. IP actually means Internet Protocol. It can operate on the internet as a remote camera, accessible through a mobile device. Normally, with an SD card and with no internet connection it will still work as a security camera. If you do have it connected to the internet, it has the option of continuous recording and offloading the footage online.
Since it’s independent of a DVR hub, it makes for a portable security device. Ever feel like you’ve installed the security camera on the wrong mount? If it’s an IP camera, no worries- just remove it and move it around and it’ll work just fine as before, provided that you have a nearby power socket.
What’s more interesting are fully independent IP cameras with batteries, which do not need a power socket to actually operate. But just when you thought that was great, we also have some fully independent, solar-powered security cameras.
Now that makes for a truly independent security camera that will go on and keep on recording even in the absence of a power outlet- provided that there is enough sunlight.
But with its internal battery and solar panels for immediate recharging, it can go on indefinitely and keep recording, which is perfect for homeowners that are very busy.
WiFi Connection
Security cameras require a lot of storage space. Video is among one of the biggest data hogs out there, and people always need a lot of data space. We’ve found a solution for that- cloud storage solution and high-speed internet is a great way to solve that.
Security cameras have since adapted this tech, and can offload their video feeds into internet-based cloud storage.
Best yet, this allows for busy people to check up on their homes and whoever is in their homes remotely using IoT technology (IoT means Internet of Things)- you just need a paired mobile device, or a secure account, which is most usually the case for these security cameras.
This is perfect for working parents that would like to check up on their kids from time to time while they're at work, as seen here:
Some would even allow for manual camera control remotely, which is obviously a great feature especially if you have a limited amount of security cameras inside your home.
This is a functionality that’s seen on Internet Protocol security cameras, perfect for smaller properties such as apartments/flats.
If you do decide to get an IP security camera and you’ll be using its remote function or you’ll be connecting it to the internet, make sure to check our guide to keep it safe from hackers and other digital intruders here.
Facial recognition
We’ve seen tech jump in leaps and bounds, and security cameras are no exception to that. You can now have a CCTV security camera set up to recognize the faces of any who pass through the lens of a security camera. This tech is now available via Elinz- you can set up one camera to recognize faces, perfect for business and offices.
Once you have facial recognition set up on the security camera, it makes it easier to review footage in the future, instead of having to manually review any kind of footage (which is very tedious and time-consuming, to say the least).
Should any incident happen, you can then tie it to a single individual or different individuals within any space in the given time period. Should anything illegal happen, this feature makes it easier to follow up with law enforcement agencies with solid video evidence.
For offices and businesses, you can also use this for attendance verification and payroll issues.
Durability and waterproofing
It used to be that security cameras were quite fragile, and could break down in extreme weather conditions such as torrential, non-stop rain or extreme heat.
With new tech that can secure the electricals of security cameras, we now have extremely durable security cameras that can be exposed to the elements, be it rain or shine.
When you’re looking for security cameras that you’re planning to place outdoors, make sure to look for security cameras that have IP waterproofing (IP66 is the standard, able to withstand even heavy, sustained rains).
Advanced Imaging And Motion Sensors
With new tech comes intelligent motion sensing and imaging. You’re now able to make out better pictures with image processors that come loaded inside the security cameras these days, and some are even able to turn on and off to save battery, based on very sensitive motion detectors inside security cameras.
This is a particularly useful and energy-saving feature for those that would like their security cameras to conserve energy and space- you can now have your cameras set to record only when necessary or when motion is detected in its immediate field of view.
So if you’re looking to replace or buy new security cameras for your home, make sure to keep an eye out for these features in your next purchase- they will make life easier and will make your home, business or office a little bit more secure than your regular cookie cutter security cameras.
