Many people would agree that one of the best things about the last week of December is that we've got lots of holidays to celebrate. The act of giving and sharing doesn't end on Christmas Day because we still have Boxing Day on the 26th. As you may know, Boxing Day is celebrated all throughout the country (except in South Australia where folks out there observe the date as Proclamation Day). This year, the holiday falls on a Thursday so you can hit the beach and party on a weekday in case you weren't able to do so during Christmas.
Traditionally, Boxing Day is the day when servants and traders receive gifts from their bosses or employers known today as the "Christmas Box." Nobody knows when or how exactly the holiday started but some say it originated in Great Britain during the Victorian era. According to some historians, households back then would celebrate Christmas on Christmas Day. However, this meant that their servants had to continue with their normal duties and miss out on the festivities.
To compensate for this, families would set aside December 26th for their servants. In keeping with the spirit of the holiday season, the servants' work load will be reduced for the day and family members will assume some of their responsibilities. Families will also give gifts to each of them and provide them with Christmas dinner.
Today, Boxing Day is the day when most people contribute cash or goods to the needy and less fortunate. Aside from Australia and the United Kingdom, it is also observed in New Zealand, Canada, Hong Kong, South Africa, and other Commonwealth nations.
So what do people do on Boxing Day aside from give each other gifts and stuff? In Australia, Boxing Day is also the day for major sporting events. On this day, you would usually see many families glued to their TV screens or at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, watching the Boxing Day test match wherein the national cricket team slugs it out with visiting national teams from other countries. Boxing Day is also the start of the famous Sydney to Hobart yacht race, also known as the Bluewater Classic.
And for non-sporting people, there's also shopping, of course. Boxing Day is a popular day for shopping as it is basically the start of the post-Christmas sale. Many stores offer their stocks at significantly reduced prices. So if you still haven't had your fill of Christmas shopping, Boxing Day presents you the perfect opportunity to get the stuff that you've always wanted (but didn't get for Christmas!).
Here at Elinz Electronics, we're having a blast because we'll also celebrate Boxing Day with a big, big sale. We are giving huge discounts on a wide range of electronic items and car accessories. So if you want to keep the tradition of giving your employees gifts this holiday season or if you want to reward yourself for this year's hard work, you should check us out. We're holding a 3-day sale starting on the 27th of December. See you there!
