The new standard - Australian Design Rule 108/00 – Reversing Technologies - will mandate the installation of reversing cameras and parking sensors on all new vehicle models from November 1, 2025.
The Australian Government has announced this new law in an effort to reduce reverse-crash road trauma, specifically involving small children on driveways. By November 1, 2027, new vehicles made from existing models - light, medium and heavy - need to have the reversing aids fitted as standard equipment.
“This new standard supports our unwavering commitment to achieving Vision Zero: zero deaths and serious injuries on our roads by 2050”, said Federal assistant minister for infrastructure and transport Carol Brown. The Australian Government has a positive outlook that this new ADR can save a total of 13 lives and avoid 140 severe and 62 minor injuries over the next 45 years.
Importance of Reversing Cameras and Parking Sensors as safety equipment
Alongside regular checking behind your car and being aware of any presence, having reversing cameras and sensors provide an extra way to check by improving rear visibility and provide assistance for tight manoeuvring to avoid accidents. They help you to see objects that might be in the blind spots such as small children. The use of these reversing technologies have reduced pedestrian crashes by between 31% and 41%.
Having reverse cameras and parking sensors help you save money by reducing the likelihood of being involved in minor collisions caused by driver error that will result in a trip to auto mechanics and a higher car insurance.
Other benefits of a reversing camera include a more convenient way of hooking up a trailer or caravan if you are travelling solo or no one’s available to guide you. Another benefit is that it provides you video evidence for your insurance company in occurrence of road mishaps.
Bottomline is that these reversing safety equipment are a great addition to your vehicle so you will be more prepared in car parks, traffic and at your own home.
