We know that the times are uncertain and the world is in an unpredictable state at the moment. There are several things we can’t control, but taking care of our homes, our properties, and our immediate environment is a way for us to make sure that no matter what happens, we have ourselves covered.
One important thing that we have to make sure of is our vehicles. We have to watch out for our cars, and especially its essential working parts. In this blog post, we’ll be talking about how to take care of our car batteries in particular. A car battery’s primary functions are starting a car’s motor — igniting the starter — and keeping it running. It also stores chemical material for conversion to electrical energy, so any electrical accessory running while the vehicle is turned off utilizes the car’s battery (like the radio, windows, lights, etc.).
Since the pandemic has made long and frequent drives not a very common occurrence anymore, it’s all the more urgent that we vigilantly check and take care of our car batteries. In the off-chance that an emergency occurs, you wouldn’t want it if you hopped into your car but it won’t start at all. With all these into consideration, how exactly do you take care of your car’s battery?
Turn off your vehicle when not in use.
You’d think it would go without saying, but leaving a light, the radio, or airconditioning left turned on is pretty common. Especially when we’re busy or we’re preoccupied with a lot of things, we end up neglecting to make sure that everything is turned off when we exit the vehicle. Be mindful — check and double-check.
Make sure the battery is secure and tightly fastened.
Listen closely — do you hear rattling, movements, or vibration coming from the battery’s area? Be very careful especially if you frequently drive on bumpy roads. A car battery that isn’t securely in its mounting risks damaging its internal components, creating short circuits and reducing battery life.
The National Roads and Motorists' Association (NRMA) recommends the following steps when it comes to cleaning your battery terminals:
- Loosen the nut and remove the negative ( - black) terminal from the battery post first – removing the terminals in this order makes it impossible to create a short circuit between the battery post and the car’s body, which is connected to the battery’s negative post or ‘grounded’.
- Loosen the nut and remove the positive ( + red) terminal from the battery post.
- Scrub any corrosion from the terminals and posts using water and a stiff brush, then dry them.
- If the corrosion is difficult to remove, use a solution of baking soda and water, but make sure none gets inside the battery.
- Securely reconnect the terminals in the reverse order – that is, positive ( + red) first, then negative ( - black).
Recharge!
Car batteries are happiest when they are kept close to 100% charge. This is why you should invest in great car battery chargers and charge it approximately every two months. And on the unfortunate event that it’s dead, your vehicle’s battery charger can jumpstart it.

Stick to a schedule and watch for all your other parts.
Don’t neglect to have everything checked at least every six months, twice a year. This means not just your car batteries, which covers having their fluids and regular replacements and clean-ups done, but your car’s overall health as well. Checking them regularly will help keep your vehicle at its peak performance
Even if we’re stuck at home because of the pandemic, we have to make sure our vehicles are always in tip-top shape. This is not just because they cost a lot of money and it would be a waste to have them repaired or replaced, but having a working vehicle is essential in everyday functioning and emergencies.
