In 2021, Australia had the 7th highest burglary rate in the world (Budget Direct). According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 1.7% (171,600) of the total households experienced a break-in which has decreased from 2.4% in 2019-20. 71% of these break-ins transpired in residential areas with about 62% entailing stealing of property (Savvy).
The drop in the rate of home burglaries has resulted from the heightened home security and higher levels of imprisonment for that offense (Australian Institute of Criminology).
What makes your house vulnerable to break-ins?
Open front doors
With this, burglars can just make their access inside the easiest way. They can knock on your front door disguising themselves as salesmen or delivery people while secretly checking your doorknob. A regular door lock and a standard door plate are very easy to jam and kick in for most experienced burglars.
Open entry windows
This is the second-most common entry point for burglars. They will use tools to jimmy your window open, or bricks or rocks for force entry. They can also use ladders, bins or stools to help them climb over fences and into windows.
Homes located in areas of low visibility
Low lighting and tall, lush trees or thickly grown shrubs are great hiding spots for burglars who want to avoid being noticed when they plan to break-in. Tall trees next to your windows in the upper levels of your home can also give burglars access inside. A dark home is also enticing in the eyes of burglars which makes it an easy target.
Open access to backyard
An evidently open backyard with no fence or blockade makes it an easy entry for burglars. A direct access from the street into your backyard means they can easily hide from passersby and neighbors while they break into your home. They could also use tools or garden equipment to break in.
Your alarm system
Installing an alarm system and not activating them when leaving home increases the risk of break ins. Most experienced burglars are not bothered by your security sign in your front gate as they are wise to this game and will still try to pry open your doors and windows Also, most homeowners forget to change their passcodes with obvious signs of wear on the keypad.
Ways to prevent break-ins in your home
Prevention is always better than any countermeasures. So whenever you have time to assess your home security, better do it now. Check your home’s weak points and apply some or all the tips mentioned above.
