We've recently been answering questions from our Quora feed, and we've come across some very interesting and fun questions that we'd like to share to you!
We've received questions about tyres, reversing cameras, dash cams, security cameras and a lot more - read on to see our answers:
The question: Can I modify an in-dash screen/head unit to play a video? / How do you make lexus DVD player to play movies while driving?
Our answer: Our head units at Elinz can play videos from different sources, such as USB, SD, DVD on top of having videos downloaded from the internet. They're fully equipped with an Android system and capacitive touch screen, but please make sure that you're only using it when you're on park, or when your vehicle is stationary.
Driver distraction might not seem much. and I know it’s not menacing, but it’s actually one of the biggest causes of vehicular accidents, right up there next to driving under the influence. That being said, no matter how good of a driver you are, it’s best to not take any chances and to always err on the safe side- don’t play any videos on your in-dash head unit.
If you'd like the full experience without worrying about driver distraction, get a headrest car DVD player and have it installed on your headrests; your passengers are allowed to watch videos and you aren’t. As the driver, your attention should be solely on the road. Head units should only have the functionality of playing music, acting as a navigation device and acting as a communication hub, hands-free. Anything more than that that takes your attention away from driving is a big no-no.
Q: Are dashcams useful in making our roads safer or an unwelcome form of surveillance?
A: That’s a really good question. Dash cams can indeed be quite intrusive especially for those that are a little more…private-minded than most. For others, they’re excellent tools to keep drivers on the straight and narrow, a deterrent against flashy and completely unnecessary (and dangerous) driving AND terrible roadside behavior.
Truth be told, I err on the side that dash cams do make roads safer and more accessible for everyone, but we need to be more vigilant with how we use these. These are for safety, the same way that security cameras protect homes; they aren’t for spying or taking footage without other people’s consent.
Uber drivers can benefit most from this, as they have a complete log of what transpired throughout the day, and they have a log of who rode with them. However drivers should make sure to ask whoever jumps in their vehicle that there is a dash cam that records both in and out. If you do capture footage that you think is a little private, as a driver you should delete it, or at the very least do not upload it.
Always keep in mind that dash cams are there to keep you safe, and for you to have a record of your driving habits- not to eavesdrop or spy on anyone that gets in your car or whoever you’ve come across in your journeys.
Q:Will a car ever have a 4k reverse camera on it?
A: It’s possible, but there really isn’t any advantage to having a 4k reverse camera. You only need to make sense of things that are going on behind your vehicle when you reverse. You don't need it to be as crystal clear as a movie in high-definition.
If you’re being sold a 4k camera at a high price point and you don’t need that much of an intense quality, maybe think twice about it- if they do exist. A resolution as massive as 4k is only viable if you have a display that can accommodate for it- which your car does not have.
Truth be told, you only need around 800x600, or even ata smaller resolution of 640x480, or around 600 TV lines for the reverse camera’s resolution. The bottom line is that you don’t need that much of a super high resolution format for reversing cameras; for dash cams, its completely understandable as they record footage; reverse cameras are just used for reversing.
Q: If you over-inflate your car tires, will it improve your fuel economy?
A: No, I don’t believe it will help with your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. It’s best to stay within the recommended PSI to make the best of your vehicle’s fuel consumption.
Another important point that’s worth noting is that when you over-inflate a tire, it becomes much, much harder than what it’s supposed to be. As such, you remove one of its most important qualities, which is it’s bounciness/elasticity. It’s this elasticity that makes it safe to drive, and is what reinforces the weight of the vehicle as it bounces around.
The contact patch of the tire also shrinks when you over-inflate the tire. So in fact, it decreases your fuel economy instead of it improving it, as your traction lessens and your car loses more control when you steer on an over-inflated tire. While an under-inflated tire causes problems, over-inflation is an equally problematic state for a tire to be in, and besides fuel economy, you run the risk of a blowout.
A blowout is potentially one of the most dangerous things to happen to you out on the road, as your car will careen out of control and potentially hit something. Again, make sure to keep your tires in the correct PSI level to prevent this issue from ever occurring, and making sure that you run at the highest fuel efficiency.
