We've been seeing a lot of questions about security cameras on our Quora feed recently, and there were some excellent ones in there that we couldn't just hold off on answering.
Here are the questions that you might be curious about too that we've answered:
The question: Why do most security cameras shoot poor quality pictures?
Our answer: A lot of security cameras shoot in sub-par quality because it needs to balance a lot of factors. Some of those factors include:
There’s a big amount of data that goes into video. For example, a quick 720P video capturing 30 minutes of footage can easily take anywhere between 100–300 mb, depending on the compression of the video itself.
It’s for this exact reason why security camera footage might look a little less clearer than most camera footage- it’s built for long periods of recording video, and it’s video is compressed for the quality of capture longevity.
That’s not to say that security cameras are indeed, subpar. Of course, if you compare it to the picture and video quality of a DSLR or any other high powered camera it will fall by the wayside. But besides quality, security cameras are also built for durability, and sometimes, they’re built to be fairly cheap and easily replaceable in the event of a tampering.
Manufacturers have to tread the line with the pricing of materials, the video quality that should be enough to capture people’s likeness, and other factors such as durability and other unforeseen circumstances. Quality isn’t the only thing it focuses on unlike other cameras- it’s important for security cameras to take on many roles other than being its namesake, a “camera”.
Nevertheless, they're excellent gear and if ever you're in doubt of your area's security, the security camera should be among your first options for securing your home or business.
The question: Why are surveillance cameras important in 2020
Our answer: Simply because they’ve always been important ever since they were put into the market, even for their first use in the 1940's - 50's.
They help put ease in the minds of the people that have them installed in their homes. They deter crime wherever they’re installed, and they’re incredibly useful for a dozen more other things.
It’s not uncommon to see security cameras in the areas we live or work in. They help keep us honest and they help us keep an eye on the things or people that we need to keep safe.
For parenting purposes, they’re used by busy parents trying to eke out a living by working 9–5, but don’t have all the time in the world to stay at home and take care of their children.
They’re used by businesses trying to keep their assets secure from ne’er-do-wells.
Sure, there are other forms of security these days, but as for physical security, the surveillance camera is an important part of detering crime. Should it happen the security camera serves as the silent witness for whatever has transpired.
Well, that really depends. It’s not all about the CCTV in this case, but the focus should be more about the DVR that it keeps the recordings on.
To help flesh that idea out, you’ll need to be familiar with a couple of specifications related to your security camera. Namely:
Of course, if your camera has 1080p and captures at a very high rate of video, and is on almost all the time, then you can expect it to overwrite material often, especially if your DVR is just in the 250–500GB range.
This is raw unedited video, and while some DVRs and security cameras have very advanced image processing and compression software, you can’t expect it to record for weeks on end without every offloading the footage.
Now some cameras offer the ability to only record at certain times of the day, or when it senses motion. It’s a good feature to have in a security camera, but make sure that it’s reliable with motion sensing.
The best thing to do here is to offload or review the video once a week, and to get a DVR of the highest storage capacity possible.
Great question! IP Cameras are unique security cameras that are gaining steady popularity these days, due in no small part to smaller properties and technology allowing for even more smaller, compact devices.
Security cameras used to be bigger and uniform in size, but now they can be very stylish and easy to pick up and move around.
In my opinion, our IP security cameras are among the best out there in the market today for a few reasons:
Here are some recommendations that I can provide:
This IP security camera is great for the indoors, and can capture everything in high resolution, on top of being able to act as an intercom.
This goes a little higher in terms of price, but is completely durable, reliable, truly standalone, and can be set for video recording only if there is movement detected.
Another one of our IP security cameras, this is the midpoint for our IP security cameras and is waterproof, durable, and carries the same features as the first mentioned above.
